Logical Branch

 


The Branch is a TOC thinking tool to logically analyse and explain a structure of cause-and-effect connections.


The Branch (also referred to as the Logical or Consequence Branch) is used to understand cause-and-effect links between actions and consequences, make predictions, and create new and better solutions.

Acquiring knowledge through reasoning

For many learning situations the facts of a story may be arranged in various ways, e.g chronological, and often not in a logical cause-and-effect manner. Understanding and recall is greatly enhanced when the logical connections are exposed using the Branch. Students do not need to rely on memory to regurgitate facts, rather reveal the flow of logic that explains the story, idea or concept beginning to end.

The Logical Branch is a structured, dynamic and systematic thinking tool that can be used by students of all ages as well as by those who lead them. When students analyse curriculum content using the Logical Branch, they are also learning to think and communicate more effectively. They are learning curriculum content and a life skill at the same time.

Finding new and better solutions

In many instances when we hear or propose a new idea we get a "Yes, but...!" reaction. The Branch is a powerful tool to resolve the negative side effects of potentially good ideas.


The Branch describes, by drawing cause-and-effect connections, how an idea could lead to a negative outcome that we fear.

As a first step we will use the Branch to understand and analyse our concerns about implementing the idea, and as a second step to find a way to implement the idea without suffering from the negative implications.

  • Life management skills
  • Parent conferences

Applied to behaviour, the Logical Branch enables students to think through consequences of their actions and behaviour.

If students identify these relationships themselves, they are much more likely to take corrective, responsible actions on their own. They not only gain confidence in their ability to solve their own problems but are often able to prevent conflicts with others. As a result, the learning environment is significantly improved.

Benefits of using the Branch in behaviour situations:

  • Enables students to understand why they should change behaviours or actions
  • Enables students to change behaviour without feeling the need to demonstrate their independence
  • Enables students to become more and more responsible for their own actions and behaviours
  • Enables students to develop the habit of 'thinking before acting'
  • Enables students to develop the academic skill of using cause-and-effect logic

 Curriculum Content Applications:

  • Analysis of narrative and informational text (oral or written)
  • Development of communication skills(oral and written)

Applied to content, the Logical Branch enables students to logically organise and explain information. Students are more likely to remember what they are learning because they are able to understand content through the logical connections embedded in the information.

Benefits of using the Branch in content applications:

  • Enables all students to meaningfully participate in lessons regardless of prior content knowledge
  • Enables students to clearly and succinctly retell and remember key points of text
  • Enhances ability to pull inferences from text
  • Enables students to identify essential, yet less obvious details in text by surfacing assumptions underlying main ideas
  • Focuses thinking beyond a literal interpretation
  • Enables students to derive answers instead of memorising them
  • Enables students to resolve inconsistencies in logic to support a position
  • Evokes classroom discussion that is more focused and meaningful
