TOCfE works through two Rotary Clubs to Demonstrate That Learning Has No Boundaries  ……Kathy Suerken, President TOC for Education

Rotary Maths 2In late winter 2014, Professor and TOCfE Senior Research Advisor,  Dr. Danilo Sirias, conducted an online training of Problem Solving Maps to 60 math teachers. They are so enthusiastic about the methodology that they have been using the concepts not only with their students but also spreading this knowledge to other teachers.

In December 2014 TOCfE was able to partner with two Rotary Clubs, Mid-Bay of Niceville, Florida and its sister club in the Philippines, Makati Central, to advance this initiative by enabling the visit of Dr. Sirias. He donated his time and expertise to conduct math workshops and TOCfE updates to large and enthusiastic groups of teachers despite obstacles of typhoon hagupit.

Rotary Maths 1While Mid-Bay Rotary Club sponsored Dr. Sirias’s flight, Makati Central Rotary Club provided home hospitality, local  transportation and other resources in support of the events. The impact of this event for the benefit of all concerned is best conveyed in the following letter from the President of Makati Central:

Dear Kathy and the Members of RC Mid-Bay of Niceville, Florida:

On behalf of your sister club, the Rotary Club of Makati Central, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for arranging the visit of Dr. Sirias to the Philippines which helped revitalize ToCFE in the Philippines. The visit brought together math teachers, supervisors and school heads numbering 120 from Valenzuela and 108 from Quezon City. The visit certainly brought renewed interests and application of ToCFE not only to said areas but to the neighboring cities of Makati and Manila.

Our Club is pleased to have been given the opportunity of taking care of Dr. and Mrs. Sirias, their week-long accommodation at the residence of our member Prakash Harchandani, transport to and from the training venue and support for the expenses for the meals and materials needed for the training.

You can always count on the support of our Club for TOCFE activities in the Philippines. Looking forward to partnering with your Club in the next TOCFE project.

Yours in Rotary,

Nes Perez, President, RC Makati Central
